Who We Are

Our church is one that emphasizes the life-giving truth of the Bible. We are small, but mighty, vibrant and unified in following the teachings of Jesus Christ. No matter who walks through the doors, this congregation will make each person feel at home. Our faith is not just for Sundays. We strive to be a light in the community, reflecting God's love every day. We celebrate together in joyous times and pull together in hard times, always seeking the Lord for strength and guidance. Members rejoice while watching the little ones learn about Jesus for the first time and value the seasoned members' wisdom and deep biblical understanding. We are a work in progress. God isn't finished with us yet!

What We Believe

The Apostle's Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty,  Maker of heaven and earth and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hades; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Church universal, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Evangelical Covenant Order of Presbyterians (ECO)

A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians is to build flourishing churches that make disciples of Jesus Christ.

ECO Core Values

Missional Centrality

We believe in living out the whole of the Great Commission – including evangelism, spiritual formation, compassion, and redemptive justice – in our communities and around the world.

Biblical Integrity

We believe the Bible is the unique and authoritative Word of God, which teaches all that is necessary for faith and life. The prominence of God’s Word over our lives shapes our priorities, and the unrivaled authority of the Bible directs our actions to be in concert with Christ’s very best for our lives.

Accountable Community

We believe guidance is a corporate spiritual experience. We want to connect people to one another in healthy relationships of accountability and care.

Egalitarian Ministry

We believe in unleashing the ministry gifts of women, men, and every ethnic group.

Thoughtful Theology

We believe in theological education, constant learning, and the life of the mind, and celebrate this as one of the treasures of our Reformed heritage.

Jesus-shaped Identity

We believe Jesus Christ must be at the center of our lives and making disciples of Jesus at the core of our ministry.

Center-focused Spirituality

We believe in calling people to the core of what it means to be followers of Jesus.

Leadership Velocity

We believe identifying and developing gospel-centered leaders is critical for the church, and a great leadership culture is risk-taking, innovative, and organic.

Our Story

The group of worshipers that formed the heart of Garwood Presbyterian Church began gathering in 1897, before the town itself was even established. Led by its first Pastor, the aptly named Reverend Love, the church laid its cornerstone on Spruce Ave in 1905. The church was completed a year later. We were known as the Chapel at Garwood and with the help of Cranford Presbyterian Church, started Sunday School programs for the children of this budding congregation.

Prayer has always been the backbone of our church, and we continue to have many dedicated prayer warriors. It would be impossible to list all of the healing, miracles, provisions, salvations, and answers that God has provided through the years, but we can honestly say that the world is significantly changed because of the work of Christ through our church.
